| 1. [2:102] | WaittabaAAoo ma tatloo alshshayateenuAAala mulki sulaymana wama kafara sulaymanuwalakinna alshshayateena kafarooyuAAallimoona alnnasa alssihra wamaonzila AAala almalakayni bibabila harootawamaroota wama yuAAallimani min ahadinhatta yaqoola innama nahnufitnatun fala takfur fayataAAallamoona minhuma mayufarriqoona bihi bayna almar-i wazawjihi wama hum bidarreenabihi min ahadin illa bi-ithni AllahiwayataAAallamoona ma yadurruhum walayanfaAAuhum walaqad AAalimoo lamani ishtarahu malahu fee al-akhirati min khalaqin walabi/sa masharaw bihi anfusahum law kanoo yaAAlamoona |  واتبعوا ما تتلو الشياطين على ملك سليمان وما كفر سليمان ولكن الشياطين كفروا يعلمون الناس السحر وما أنزل على الملكين ببابل هاروت وماروت وما يعلمان من أحد حتى يقولا إنما نحن فتنة فلا تكفر فيتعلمون منهما ما يفرقون به بين المرء وزوجه وما هم بضارين به من أحد إلا بإذن الله ويتعلمون ما يضرهم ولا ينفعهم ولقد علموا لمن اشتراه ما له في الآخرة من خلاق ولبئس ما شروا به أنفسهم لو كانوا يعلمونوَاتَّبَعُواْ مَا تَتْلُواْ الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَى مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَـكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّى يَقُولاَ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلاَ تَكْفُرْ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِ وَمَا هُم بِضَآرِّينَ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِ اللّهِ وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلاَ يَنفَعُهُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُواْ لَمَنِ اشْتَرَاهُ مَا لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلاَقٍ وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْاْ بِهِ أَنفُسَهُمْ لَوْ كَانُواْ يَعْلَمُونَ | |||||

| Tahir ul Qadri | اور وہ (یہود تو) اس چیز (یعنی جادو) کے پیچھے (بھی) لگ گئے تھے جو سلیمان (علیہ السلام) کے عہدِ حکومت میں شیاطین پڑھا کرتے تھے حالانکہ سلیمان (علیہ السلام) نے (کوئی) کفر نہیں کیا بلکہ کفر تو شیطانوں نے کیا جو لوگوں کو جادو سکھاتے تھے اور اس (جادو کے علم) کے پیچھے (بھی) لگ گئے جو شہر بابل میں ہاروت اور ماروت (نامی) دو فرشتوں پر اتارا گیا تھا، وہ دونوں کسی کو کچھ نہ سکھاتے تھے یہاں تک کہ کہہ دیتے کہ ہم تو محض آزمائش (کے لئے) ہیں سو تم (اس پر اعتقاد رکھ کر) کافر نہ بنو، اس کے باوجود وہ (یہودی) ان دونوں سے ایسا (منتر) سیکھتے تھے جس کے ذریعے شوہر اور اس کی بیوی کے درمیان جدائی ڈال دیتے، حالانکہ وہ اس کے ذریعے کسی کو بھی نقصان نہیں پہنچا سکتے مگر اللہ ہی کے حکم سے اور یہ لوگ وہی چیزیں سیکھتے ہیں جو ان کے لئے ضرر رساں ہیں اور انہیں نفع نہیں پہنچاتیں اور انہیں (یہ بھی) یقینا معلوم تھا کہ جو کوئی اس (کفر یا جادو ٹونے) کا خریدار بنا اس کے لئے آخرت میں کوئی حصہ نہیں (ہوگا)، اور وہ بہت ہی بری چیز ہے جس کے بدلے میں انہوں نے اپنی جانوں (کی حقیقی بہتری یعنی اُخروی فلاح) کو بیچ ڈالا، کاش! وہ اس (سودے کی حقیقت) کو جانتے | ||||||
| Yousuf Ali | They followed what the evil ones gave out (falsely) against the power of Solomon: the blasphemers Were, not Solomon, but the evil ones, teaching men Magic, and such things as came down at babylon to the angels Harut and Marut. But neither of these taught anyone (Such things) without saying: "We are only for trial; so do not blaspheme." They learned from them the means to sow discord between man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's permission. And they learned what harmed them, not what profited them. And they knew that the buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of the Hereafter. And vile was the price for which they did sell their souls, if they but knew!

| Ahmed Raza Khan | اور اس کے پیرو ہوئے جو شیطان پڑھا کرتے تھے سلطنت سلیمان کے زمانہ میں اور سلیمان نے کفر نہ کیا ہاں شیطان کافر ہوئے لوگوں کو جادو سکھاتے ہیں اور وہ (جادو) جو بابل میں دو فرشتوں ہاروت و ماروت پر اترا اور وہ دونوں کسی کو کچھ نہ سکھاتے جب تک یہ نہ کہہ لیتے کہ ہم تو نری آزمائش ہیں تو اپنا ایمان نہ کھو تو ان سے سیکھتے وہ جس سے جدائی ڈالیں مرد اور اس کی عورت میں اور اس سے ضرر نہیں پہنچا سکتے کسی کو مگر خدا کے حکم سے اور وہ سیکھتے ہیں جو انہیں نقصان دے گا نفع نہ دے گا اور بیشک ضرور انہیں معلوم ہے کہ جس نے یہ سودا لیا آخرت میں اس کا کچھ حصہ نہیں اور بیشک کیا بری چیز ہے وہ جس کے بدلے انہوں نے اپنی جانیں بیچیں کسی طرح انہیں علم ہوتا- | ||||||
| Shabbir Ahmed | اور پیچھے لگ گئے ان (خرافات) کے جنہیں پڑھتے پڑھاتے تھے شیاطین، سلیمان کے عہدِ حکومت میں حالانکہ نہیں کفر کیا سلیمان نے بلکہ ان شیطانوں نے کفر کیا، سکھاتے تھے لوگوں کو جادُو اور (پیچھے لگ گئے)اس (علم) کے جو نازل کیا گیا دو فرشتوں پر بابل میں یعنی ہاروت اور ماروت پر۔ حالانکہ وہ دونوں نہیں سکھاتے تھے کسی کو (وہ علم) جب تک نہ کہہ لیں یہ کہ ہم تو محض ایک آزمائش میں، لٰہذا تو کفر میں مُبتلا نہ ہو۔ پھر بھی وہ سیکھتے تھے ان دونوں سے ایسی چیز کہ جدائی ڈال دیں وہ اس سے مرد اور اس کی بیوی کے درمیان۔ حالانکہ وہ نہیں پہنچا سکتے تھے نقصان اس سے کسی کو مگر اللہ کے اِذن سے۔اور سیکھتے تھے یہ لوگ (ان سے) ایسی چیزیں جو نقصان تو پہنچائیں انہیں، لیکن نفع بالکل نہ دیں۔ حالانکہ وہ خوب جانتے تھے کہ بیشک جو اس کا خریدار بنا، نہیں ہے اس کے لیے آخرت میں کوئی حصّہ۔ اور یقیناً بہت ہی بُری تھی وہ چیز کہ بیچ ڈالا تھا اُنہوں نے اس کے عوض اپنی جانوں کو۔ کاش! وہ جانتے۔ | ||||||
| Fateh Muhammad Jalandhary | اور ان (ہزلیات) کے پیچھے لگ گئے جو سلیمان کے عہدِ سلطنت میں شیاطین پڑھا کرتے تھے اور سلیمان نے مطلق کفر کی بات نہیں کی، بلکہ شیطان ہی کفر کرتے تھے کہ لوگوں کو جادو سکھاتے تھے۔ اور ان باتوں کے بھی (پیچھے لگ گئے) جو شہر بابل میں دو فرشتوں (یعنی) ہاروت اور ماروت پر اتری تھیں۔ اور وہ دونوں کسی کو کچھ نہیں سکھاتے تھے، جب تک یہ نہ کہہ دیتے کہ ہم تو (ذریعہٴ) آزمائش ہیں۔ تم کفر میں نہ پڑو۔ غرض لوگ ان سے (ایسا) جادو سیکھتے، جس سے میاں بیوی میں جدائی ڈال دیں۔ اور خدا کے حکم کے سوا وہ اس (جادو) سے کسی کا کچھ بھی نہیں بگاڑ سکتے تھے۔ اور کچھ ایسے (منتر) سیکھتے جو ان کو نقصان ہی پہنچاتے اور فائدہ کچھ نہ دیتے۔ اور وہ جانتے تھے کہ جو شخص ایسی چیزوں (یعنی سحر اور منتر وغیرہ) کا خریدار ہوگا، اس کا آخرت میں کچھ حصہ نہیں۔ اور جس چیز کے عوض انہوں نے اپنی جانوں کو بیچ ڈالا، وہ بری تھی۔ کاش وہ (اس بات کو) جانتے | ||||||

| Abul Ala Maududi | اور لگے اُن چیزوں کی پیروی کرنے، جو شیا طین، سلیمانؑ کی سلطنت کا نام لے کر پیش کیا کرتے تھے، حالانکہ سلیمانؑ نے کبھی کفر نہیں کیا، کفر کے مرتکب تو وہ شیاطین تھے جو لوگوں کو جادو گری کی تعلیم دیتے تھے وہ پیچھے پڑے اُس چیز کے جو بابل میں دو فرشتوں، ہاروت و ماروت پر نازل کی گئی تھی، حالانکہ وہ (فرشتے) جب بھی کسی کو اس کی تعلیم دیتے تھے، تو پہلے صاف طور پر متنبہ کر دیا کرتے تھے کہ "دیکھ، ہم محض ایک آزمائش ہیں، تو کفر میں مبتلا نہ ہو" پھر بھی یہ لوگ اُن سے وہ چیز سیکھتے تھے، جس سے شوہر اور بیوی میں جدائی ڈال دیں ظاہر تھا کہ اذنِ الٰہی کے بغیر وہ اس ذریعے سے کسی کو بھی ضرر نہ پہنچا سکتے تھے، مگراس کے باوجود وہ ایسی چیز سیکھتے تھے جو خود ان کے لیے نفع بخش نہیں، بلکہ نقصان د ہ تھی اور انہیں خوب معلوم تھا کہ جو اس چیز کا خریدار بنا، اس کے لیے آخرت میں کوئی حصہ نہیں کتنی بری متاع تھی جس کے بدلے انہوں نے اپنی جانوں کو بیچ ڈالا، کاش انہیں معلوم ہوتا! | ||||||

| Literal | And they followed what the devils read/recite on Soliman's kingdom/ownership and Soliman did not disbelieve, and but the devils disbelieved. They teach the people the magic/sorcery and what was descended on the two kings/angels Harut and Marutat Babylon, and they (B) do not teach from anyone until they (B) say: "But we are a test , so do not disbelieve". So they learn from them (B) what they separate with it between the human/man and his wife, and they are not with harming with it from anyone except with God's permission. And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them, and they had known for who (E) bought it, (there is) no share of blessing/fortune for him in the end (other life), and how bad (E) (is) what they bought/volunteered with it themselves, if they were knowing? | ||||||

People learned something from the two angels that could cause discord between a man and his wife. However, they could harm no one except by the permission of God. In fact, the (people) learned things that would harm them and render them no benefit. They knew very well that one who engaged in witchcraft would have no reward in the life hereafter. Would that they had known that they had sold their souls for that which is vile! | ||||||

Yet, these two angels never taught magic to anyone without saying: "We have been sent to tempt you; do not renounce your faith." In spite of this warning, those people kept on learning from the angels, the magic of which could cause discord between husband and wife; although they could harm none with it except with Allah | ||||||

They taught the people sorcery, and that which was sent down through the two angels of Babel, Haroot and Maroot. These two did not divulge such knowledge without pointing out: "This is a test. You shall not abuse such knowledge." But the people used it in such evil schemes as the breaking up of marriages. They can never harm anyone against the will of GOD. They thus learn what hurts them, not what benefits them, and they know full well that whoever practices witchcraft will have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable indeed is what they sell their souls for, if they only knew. | ||||||

Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayatin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Haroot and Maroot, but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, "We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from us)." And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allahs Leave. | QXP Shabbir Ahemd** | (They followed conjecture in the past as well.) Some rebellious people spread a rumor in the Kingdom of Solomon. Solomon never disbelieved in the Divine Laws, but the rebellious ones did. They fabricated a story that two angels Harut and Marut had descended in Babylon and taught magic to people. That they used to warn people, "We are only a temptation, therefore be not oblivious to the rational Divine Laws." The rumor further stated that people learned magic from these two angels how to create discord between a man and his wife. (This entire story is nothing but falsehood. Magic, amulets, ghoul, demon-possession, exorcism, witchcraft, evil eye, fortune telling, astrology, palm reading, clairvoyance, voodoo are nothing but conjecture). These things can neither harm nor benefit anyone since they are contrary to the Divine Laws in Nature ((3:123-127), (6:73), (7:54), (45:22)). (Superstitions can harm people by becoming self-fulfilling prophecies). And that which they try to learn only harms them and profits not. They are well aware that any person indulging in this trade (of the so-called "Occult sciences") will be a loser in the long run, and shall have no portion in the Hereafter. And surely, evil is the price for which they (magicians, diviners, clairvoyants, fortunetellers and claimants to witchcraft) sell their humanity, if they but knew better. | ||||||
