Qala innama ooteetuhu AAalaAAilmin AAindee awa lam yaAAlam anna Allaha qad ahlaka minqablihi mina alqurooni man huwa ashaddu minhu quwwatan waaktharujamAAan wala yus-alu AAan thunoobihimu almujrimoona قال إنما أوتيته على علم عندي أولم يعلم أن الله قد أهلك من قبله من القرون من هو أشد منه قوة وأكثر جمعا ولا يسأل عن ذنوبهم المجرمون
قَالَ إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عِندِي أَوَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَهْلَكَ مِن قَبْلِهِ مِنَ القُرُونِ مَنْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرُ جَمْعًا وَلَا يُسْأَلُ عَن ذُنُوبِهِمُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ

  وہ کہنے لگا: (میں یہ مال معاشرے اور عوام پر کیوں خرچ کروں) مجھے تویہ مال صرف اس (کسبی) علم و ہنر کی بنا پر دیا گیا ہے جو میرے پاس ہے۔ کیا اسے یہ معلوم نہ تھا کہ اللہ نے واقعۃً اس سے پہلے بہت سی ایسی قوموں کو ہلاک کر دیا تھا جو طاقت میں اس سے کہیں زیادہ سخت تھیں اور (مال و دولت اور افرادی قوت کے) جمع کرنے میں کہیں زیادہ (آگے) تھیں، اور (بوقتِ ہلاکت) مجرموں سے ان کے گناہوں کے بارے میں (مزید تحقیق یا کوئی عذر اور سبب) نہیں پوچھا جائے گا

Yousuf AliHe said: "This has been given to me because of a certain knowledge which I have." Did he not know that Allah had destroyed, before him, (whole) generations,- which were superior to him in strength and greater in the amount (of riches) they had collected? but the wicked are not called (immediately) to account for their sins.

Ahmed Aliکہا یہ تو مجھے ایک ہنر سے ملا ہے جو میرے پاس ہے کیا اسے معلوم نہیں کہ الله نے اس سے پہلے بہت سی امتیں جو اس سے قوت میں بڑھ کر اور جمیعت میں زیادہ تھیں ہلاک کر ڈالی ہیں اور گناہگاروں سے ان کے گناہوں کے بارے میں پوچھا نہیں جائے گا
Ahmed Raza Khanبو لا یہ تو مجھے ایک علم سے ملا ہے جو میرے پاس ہے اور کیا اسے یہ نہیں معلوم کہ اللہ نے اس سے پہلے وہ سنگتیں (قومیں) ہلاک فرمادیں جن کی قوتیں اس سے سخت تھیں اور جمع اس سے زیادہ اور مجرموں سے ان کے گناہوں کی پوچھ نہیں
Shabbir Ahmed اس نے کہا: حقیقت یہ ہے کہ دیا گیا ہے یہ سب کچھ مجھے اس علم کی بنا پر جو مجھے حاصل ہے۔ کیا نہیں جانتا وہ کہ اللہ یقینا ہلاک کرچُکا ہے اس سے پہلے بہت سی قوموں کو جس کے لوگ کہیں زیادہ تھے اس سے قوّت میں اور بہت زیادہ تھے جمعیت کے لحاظ سے، اور نہیں پُوچھا جاتا (بوقتِ ہلاکت) ان کے گناہوں کے بارے میں مجرموں سے۔'
Fateh Muhammad Jalandharyبولا کہ یہ (مال) مجھے میری دانش (کے زور) سے ملا ہے کیا اس کو معلوم نہیں کہ خدا نے اس سے پہلے بہت سی اُمتیں جو اس سے قوت میں بڑھ کر اور جمعیت میں بیشتر تھیں ہلاک کر ڈالی ہیں۔ اور گنہگاروں سے اُن کے گناہوں کے بارے میں پوچھا نہیں جائے گا
Mehmood Al Hassanبولا یہ مال تو مجھ کو ملا ہے ایک ہنر سے جو میرے پاس ہے کیا اس نے یہ نہ جانا کہ اللہ غارت کر چکا ہے اس سے پہلے کتنی جماعتیں جو اس سے زیادہ رکھتی تھیں زور اور زیادہ رکھتی تھیں مال کی جمع اور پوچھی نہ جائیں گنہگاروں سے ان کے گناہ
Abul Ala Maududiتو اُس نے کہا "یہ سب کچھ تو مجھے اُس علم کی بنا پر دیا گیا ہے جو مجھ کو حاصل ہے" کیا اس کو علم نہ تھا کہ اللہ اس سے پہلے بہت سے ایسے لوگوں کو ہلاک کر چکا ہے جو اس سے زیادہ قوت اور جمعیت رکھتے تھے؟ مجرموں سے تو ان کے گناہ نہیں پوچھے جاتے

And the criminals/sinners do not be asked/questioned about their crimes.

Arberry He said, 'What I have been given is only because of a knowledge that is in me.' What, did he not know that God bad destroyed before him generations of men stronger than he ill might, and more numerous in multitude? And yet the sinners shall not be questioned concerning their sins.

(There will be no need) to ask the criminals what sins they have committed, (for the angels already know them)

[I.e., "as a result of my own experience, shrewdness and ability" (cf. 39:49 and the corresponding note).] Did he not know that God had destroyed [the arrogant of] many a generation that preceded him - people who were greater than he in power, and richer in what they had amassed? But such as are lost in sin may not be asked about, their sins. [Obviously implying that "such as are lost in sin" (al-mujrimun) are, as a rule, blind to their own failings and, therefore, not responsive to admonition.]
Khalifa**He said, "I attained all this because of my own cleverness." Did he not realize that GOD had annihilated before him generations that were much stronger than he, and greater in number? The (annihilated) transgressors were not asked about their crimes.
Hilali/Khan**He said: "This has been given to me only because of knowledge I possess." Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him generations, men who were stronger than him in might and greater in the amount (of riches) they had collected. But the Mujrimoon (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) will not be questioned of their sins (because Allah knows them well, so they will be punished without account).
QXP Shabbir Ahemd**He replied, "This wealth has been given to me because of the knowledge that is in me." Did he not know that Allah's Law of Requital had annihilated, before him, whole generations which were superior to him in strength and richer in what they had amassed? But such guilty need no questioning since their guilt is obvious and yet, they are not exempt from the Law of Respite.
