| بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ |
| 1. [28:82] | Waasbaha allatheenatamannaw makanahu bial-amsi yaqooloona waykaannaAllaha yabsutu alrrizqa liman yashaomin AAibadihi wayaqdiru lawla an manna AllahuAAalayna lakhasafa bina waykaannahu la yuflihualkafiroona |  وأصبح الذين تمنوا مكانه بالأمس يقولون ويكأن الله يبسط الرزق لمن يشاء من عباده ويقدر لولا أن من الله علينا لخسف بنا ويكأنه لا يفلح الكافرونوَأَصْبَحَ الَّذِينَ تَمَنَّوْا مَكَانَهُ بِالْأَمْسِ يَقُولُونَ وَيْكَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَقْدِرُ لَوْلَا أَن مَّنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا لَخَسَفَ بِنَا وَيْكَأَنَّهُ لَا يُفْلِحُ الْكَافِرُونَ | |||||

| Tahir ul Qadri | اور جو لوگ کل اس کے مقام و مرتبہ کی تمنا کر رہے تھے (اَز رہِ ندامت) کہنے لگے: کتنا عجیب ہے کہ اللہ اپنے بندوں میں سے جس کے لئے چاہتا ہے رزق کشادہ فرماتا اور (جس کے لئے چاہتا ہے) تنگ فرماتا ہے، اگر اللہ نے ہم پر احسان نہ فرمایا ہوتا تو ہمیں (بھی) دھنسا دیتا، ہائے تعجب ہے! (اب معلوم ہوا) کہ کافر نجات نہیں پا سکتے | ||||||
| Yousuf Ali | And those who had envied his position the day before began to say on the morrow: "Ah! it is indeed Allah Who enlarges the provision or restricts it, to any of His servants He pleases! had it not been that Allah was gracious to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us up! Ah! those who reject Allah will assuredly never prosper."

| Ahmed Raza Khan | اور کل جس نے اس کے مرتبہ کی آرزو کی تھی صبح کہنے لگے عجب بات ہے اللہ رزق وسیع کرتا ہے اپنے بندوں میں جس کے لیے چاہے اور تنگی فرماتا ہے اگر اللہ ہم پر احسان فرماتا تو ہمیں بھی دھنسادیتا، اے عجب، کافروں کا بھلا نہیں، | ||||||
| Shabbir Ahmed | اور پھر صبح کے وقت، وہ لوگ جو تمنّا کررہے تھے اس کے مربتہ کی کل تک، کہنےلگے! افسوس (ہم بھول گئے تھے) کہ اللہ کشادہ کرتا ہے رزق جس کے لیے چاہے اپنے بندوں میں سے اور نپا تلا دیتا ہے (جسے چاہے) اور اگر نہ کیا ہوتا احسان اللہ نے ہم پر تو دھنسادیتا ہم کو بھی۔ افسوس (ہم بُھول گئے) کہ نہیں فلاح پایا کرتے کافر۔ | ||||||

| Mehmood Al Hassan | اور فجر کو لگے کہنے جو کل شام آرزو کرتے تھے اس کا سا درجہ ارے خرابی یہ تو اللہ کھول دیتا ہے روزی جس کو چاہے اپنے بندوں میں اور تنگ کر دیتا ہے اگر نہ احسان کرتا ہم پر اللہ تو ہم کو بھی دھنسا دیتا اے خرابی یہ تو چھٹکارا نہیں پاتے منکر | ||||||
| Abul Ala Maududi | اب وہی لوگ جو کل اس کی منزلت کی تمنا کر رہے تھے کہنے لگے "افسوس، ہم بھول گئے تھے کہ اللہ اپنے بندوں میں سے جس کا رزق چاہتا ہے کشادہ کرتا ہے اور جسے چاہتا ہے نَپا تلا دیتا ہے اگر اللہ نے ہم پر احسان نہ کیا ہوتا تو ہمیں بھی زمین میں دَھنسا دیتا افسوس ہم کو یاد نہ رہا کہ کافر فلاح نہیں پایا کرتے" | ||||||

| Literal | And those who wished/desired his place/position at the yesterday/past became/became in the morning saying: "Woe as if/as though God spreads/extends the provision to whom He wills/wants from His worshippers/slaves , and He is capable/able , if only that God blessed on us He would have sunk down (the land) with us, woe, as if he/as though He does not make the disbelievers succeed/win ." | ||||||

| Pickthal | And morning found those who had coveted his place but yesterday crying: Ah, welladay! Allah enlargeth the provision for whom He will of His slaves and straiteneth it (for whom He will). If Allah had not been gracious unto us He would have caused it to swallow us (also). Ah, welladay! the disbelievers never prosper. | ||||||
| Arberry | and in the morning those who had longed to be in his place the day before were saying, 'Ah, God outspreads and straitens His provision to whomsoever He will of His servants. Had God not been gracious to us, He would have made us to be swallowed too. Ah, the unbelievers do not prosper, | ||||||
| Shakir | And those who yearned for his place only the day before began to say: Ah! (know) that Allah amplifies and straitens the means of subsistence for whom He pleases of His servants; had not Allah been gracious to us, He would most surely have abased us; ah! (know) that the ungrateful are never successful. | ||||||
| Sarwar | The people who the other day had wished to be like him, began saying, "Woe to us! God gives abundant wealth only to those of His servants whom He wants and He determines everyone's share. Had it not been for God's favor to us, He would have caused the earth to swallow us up. Woe to the unbelievers who will have no happiness." | ||||||

If not that Allah had conferred favor on us, He would have caused it to swallow us. Oh, how the disbelievers do not succeed! | ||||||
| Malik | Your Lord creates whatever He wills and chooses for His work whom He pleases. It is not for them (pagans) to choose indeed Allah Who enlarges the provision for whom He wills and restricts it from whom He pleases. If Allah had not been gracious to us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us too. Alas! We did not remember that the disbelievers never attain felicity."[82] | ||||||

(know) that Allah amplifies and straitens the means of subsistence for whom He pleases of His servants; had not Allah been gracious to us, He would have abased us. Ah! | Free Minds | And those who wished they were in his place the day before said: "Indeed it is God Who provides or restricts for whomever He chooses from among His servants. Had it not been for God's grace towards us, He could have caused the Earth to swallow us as well. We now realise that the rejecters never succeed." | ||||||
| Qaribullah | And in the morning those who had wished to be in his place the previous evening said: 'Indeed, Allah outspreads to whom He will among His worshipers, and He restrains. Had He not shown us favor, He could have caused the earth to swallow us. Indeed, the unbelievers shall never prosper. ' | ||||||
| George Sale | And the next morning, those who had coveted his condition the day before, said, aha! Verily God bestoweth abundant provision on such of his servants as He pleaseth; and He is sparing unto whom He pleaseth. Unless God had been gracious unto us, certainly the earth had swallowed us up also. Aha! The unbelievers shall not prosper. | ||||||

Had not God been gracious to us, He might have caused [the earth] to swallow us, too! Alas [for our having forgotten] that those who deny the truth can never attain to a happy state!" | ||||||
| Khalifa** | Those who were envious of him the day before said, "Now we realize that GOD is the One who provides for whomever He chooses from among His servants, and withholds. If it were not for GOD's grace towards us, He could have caused the earth to swallow us too. We now realize that the disbelievers never succeed." | ||||||
